Panama’s Vice President and Minister of Foreign Relations Juan Carlos Varela condemned the acts of violence that claimed the lives of at least 70 people in northern Mexico last week.

It is suspected that the Zetas cartel, a group of former Mexican army special forces known to extort immigrants, is responsible.

The Panamanian Minister’s press release offered condolences to the victims’ families and lamented the violence related to organized crime in the region.

Furthermore, the Panamanian government invited “all the countries of the region to redouble efforts to combat these scourges” at the Meeting of Central American Attorney Generals, Police Chiefs and Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Public Security and Defense that will be held in Antigua, Guatemala on Friday.
