The Green Sky, fronted by Zed Vienot, will be rocking out Panama City’s Sahara Bar on Friday, bringing what critics have described as a mind-blowing performance and contagious energy to the stage.
The riff-heavy music channels Metallica, AC/DC and Propagandhi, but has drawn on rock, punk and metal to create its own pure Green Sky sound.
Fairly new to the Panama music scene, the band came together in 2007 when Zed Vienot, six-years-old at the time, met music veterans Potifar Garcia de Paredes and Alex Alba at a house party in Casco Viejo’s former music conservatory. According to Green Sky legend, noticing that they all had the same guitar-shaped scare on their cheekbones, the three musicians decided to start a band.
Three years later, The Green Sky members describe their relationship as “tight like bros.” Self-labeled as gimmicky, the current lineup features Zed Vienot on guitar and vocals; Potifar Garcia de Paredes on guitar, bass and vocals; Alex Alba on guitar, bass and vocals; and Massiel Pinzón on drums.
“I mean, come on: a nine-year-old kid as a front man, a girl on drums, and two losers on guitar and bass… Genius,” Garcia de Paredes said.
When asked whom Green Sky might compare to, everyone in the band agrees that it is impossible to equate it to anything that has ever existed.
Categorizable or not, a Green Sky show throws both performers and spectators into a wild frenzy, an experience which Zed’s manager and brother, Archi Vienot describes as unforgettable.
“This is something that you will remember for the rest of your life,” he said.
On Friday, The Green Sky will play their full set list for the first time, including cult-classics like Rollercoaster and Cowboy is Coming to my House, as well as two undisclosed covers.
The band has also taken the stage at the Figali Convention Center, Old Club Union, Festival Verde de Cultura Musical, Gasthaus and The Gallery.
And, their growing fan club will be happy to hear that an album is in the works, including a new inspirational instrumental track called “3%.”
Doors for Friday’s show at Calle Uruguay’s Sahara Bar open at 9 p.m.
“It’s going to be wild,” Zed said.
