Permit for Terminator Mosquitoes Still Pending

The Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies is still waiting on the go-ahead to release genetically modified mosquitos in Panama in 2014.

Nestor Sosa, the institute’s director, says that they have been waiting five months for the National Biosafety Commission permits to be able to introduce the species in Arraijan.

Lab testing began last February as part of a project launched in 2011 by the British company Oxitec, which seeks to terminate the dengue-transmitting Aedes aegypti by mating transgenic male mosquitoes with wild female mosquitoes to kill off larvae.
