Varela to Increase Citizen Security

President-elect Juan Carlos Varela announced that he will transfer 700 to 1,000 National Border Service, National Air Service and Insitutional Protection Service units to provide citizen security.

Security experts view this interagency effort as a positive initiative since the National Police is overloaded with crime, and the incoming government hopes that the outgoing administration will share any specific security concerns for evaluation.

Varela also noted that he does not support President Ricardo Martinelli’s proposal for the State to bankroll extended bodyguard service for former presidents and their families, maintaining that the president has enough resources to provide security for his family.
