Fire in the Colon Free Zone

A fire broke out around 12:15 am and raged for more than eight hours in the Colon Free Zone on Saturday .

The flames consumed a Panama International Tire warehouse and part of another storage facility in France Field, requiring hundreds of units from Panama and Colon fire departments to extinguish the blaze, a task complicated by a lack of water pressure.

Authorities will investigate the cause of the fire, the second to break out in the France Field deposits in recent months.

Founded in 1948, the Colon Free Zone is the largest free port in the Western Hemisphere and houses some 2,500 companies.
