Good gracious. Such a tragedy to everyone involved. Senseless slayings of innocent people. If you’re going to kill for whatever reason, you should be ready for the consequences. Is Dathan so stupid that he doesn’t realize what danger he puts his family back home and his self in by naming these “drug cartel” members? Who cares anyway? He pulled the trigger, regardless of who’s “command” he was under. It’s bad enough that he abandoned his beautiful wife, children, and loving family back home in North Carolina, but to further put them in danger by making accusations on “drug cartel” members is just insane. What a sociopath – absolutely NO regard for anyone but himself and his “so called wife”. That wasn’t his wife – his wife is still taking care of his 3 children back in North Carolina and living with the embarrassment of what has happened…

Here we have the very definition of a “slippery slope,” or good intentions with unintended consequences. The best a United States Supreme Court justice could say of pornography was “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it,” but along comes Victor Juliao who has pinned it down thus: “Material…that does not lead to strengthening morality or ethics.” Can one imagine the future censorship board running amok with Deputy Juliao’s definition as its guide? Between an annoyance and an evil, best stick with the annoyance. #

Ngöbe Bugle agree to suspend disruptions in return for arrested being released and talks being held in Panama City, which is where they were at the beginning, before one martyr was dead. Moreover, govt. claims their demands re mining were unnecessary and they won’t accomplish their demands re hydroeletric ecology
because it’s not good for the country. Brave effort, laudable
solidarity, lots of noise, but have protests gained anything? Is there a victory here not apparent to the reader?

My friend in Panama was arrested, along with 45 other young professionals from Panama City (engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc) as they tried to join the Ngobe-Bugle people in their protest. They all suffered from being beaten with clubs and attacked with tear gas, and they were held for nearly five days in prison without being allowed any communication with family or legal aid . They were released yesterday, February 4th. Also, telecommunications provider Cable & Wireless cut phone service to the protest area. Yesterday, 30 construction workers who protested in support of the Ngobe-Bugle were also beaten, tear-gassed and jailed. This is the side of the story that’s not being told. Many Panamanians support the Ngobe-Bugle efforts to shift the government’s priorities from profit to people and the planet.
